During this session at Bannerman High, a new form of captaincy was introduced, offering students the opportunity to participate in one of nine groups: School Environment, Anti-Racism, LGBTQ+ Equality, Local Community, Children’s Rights, Education, Student-Teacher Relationships, Anti- Bullying, and Health and Wellbeing.
Each group actively works to support students and improve both the school and the wider community. Currently, several projects are underway within these groups. For example, the Anti- Racism group is organising a culture day, and in December, the Local Community team will host a Christmas Fayre, which will include participation from local businesses, residents, and students’ families. The student captains have also engaged with Glasgow City Council’s Head of Education, Douglas Hutchison, to discuss both their successes and the ongoing challenges in addressing issues such as bullying, racism, and the overall school environment across Glasgow. In addition, meetings have been held with the head of Glasgow City Council to discuss concerns specific to Baillieston and the surrounding area.
As the year progresses, the captains will continue to work diligently on various projects to ensure a positive and safe environment for younger pupils
and hope to encourage them to take on their roles after they leave.
